Interesting reading about Zambia's economy. My quick research says that copper prices have risen from $.75 to $3.50 since 2003 while world stocks have been reduced from 900,000 to 90,000 tonnes. Zambia had mined $1bil worth of copper and still has reserves of over $2bil. However, the mines were government run before and now being privatized. I wonder if this means their might be turnaround in their copper industry? What do you think?

enjoy the final days of your stay!

Murray

Tina,Thanks for the thoughtful big picture summary...

Tina,

Thanks for the thoughtful big picture summary of so many important issues relating to the frustrations you have seen! It's great that it seems like you're enjoying your stay in Zambia.

Reading your blog, it seems that Zambians, even in the face of little gain, pour forth their effort to make their own lives better. Its heart-warming knowing that such people exist, and from my perspective, it looks like they just need just the slightest opportunity to greatly improve their lives.

I also find it sad that a country that had a dollar parity to the US could be brought to an economic halt through the whims of market forces, although I don't think it's unheard of. But hopefully Zambia, and all of Africa can eventually attain economic sustainability and growth with a bit of aid.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay, and I hope to see you back in the fall!

Take care!
